Magia Record’s Doomed Yuri

Two girls with rough pasts meet as magical girls. Their uncertainties and wariness soon turns to friendship, then, something deeper. But before either can make a significant change to their relationship, tragedy strikes. Mikoto finds herself being pulled away from who she was and Hanna is pushed toward becoming a villain in order to keep Mikoto safe. When the dust settles, Hanna is dead and Mikoto has to find a way to cope with her loss.But love finds a way, and through magic, they’re reunited for one last Christmas together.

What’s Magia Record?

Magia Record: Puella Magi Madoka Magica Side Story (Japanese: マギアレコード 魔法少女まどか☆マギカ外伝) was a Japanese role-playing video game developed by f4samurai for Android and iOS, which was released by Aniplex in Japan on August 22, 2017. The game is a spin-off of the 2011 anime series Puella Magi Madoka Magica, and follows a new protagonist, Iroha Tamaki, who arrives in Kamihama City in search of her missing sister. The game closed its servers on July 31, 2024, to be replaced by Magia Exedra, a 3D gacha game in development with characters carried over from Magia Record.

She is a magical girl who has been making suggestions to herself and turning her back on reality. On the surface, she is a friendly and amiable girl, but she also has a ruthless nature that will not hesitate to make a decision that will make someone else miserable. She continues to spend her days experiencing happiness when she goes out and unhappiness when she comes home.

Her Story

Mikoto’s story is a tale of tragedy. She grew up poor with an abusive father who spent all of their meager money, leaving little for Mikoto and her mother. Kyubey enters this situation and offers Mikoto a contract, she eagerly takes it to wish her father leaves them. She had hoped this would fix her life, but instead her mother turned to neglecting her, going out and partying all the time. Mikoto copes by pretending everything at home is fine and lying to her school friends. Then, she meets Hanna.Hanna is the very first Magical Girl Mikoto meets and she’s instantly wants to be her friend. Hanna’s kindness and intelligence impress her and she fears if she’s honest about her home life she’ll lose her friendship.She turns to using her magical powers to hypnotize herself into thinking things are okay, using magic almost all day. This darkens her Soul Gem and soon she turns into a Witch.While such an event usually spells the end for a girl, something between Mikoto’s and Hanna’s magic makes a bizarre phenomenon occur. Mikoto becomes able to transplant her consciousness into Hanna, able to appear to her and talk to her like a ghost. But becoming a Witch has changed Mikoto, she becomes bitter and wants to lash out at the world.Hanna, unable to let Mikoto dirty her hands, becomes a villain in her stead; hoping in vain that if she dies to the heroes it will give Mikoto a new lease on life. But this plan fails and Hanna’s death only serves to deepen Mikoto’s despair.After causing our story’s main heroes a lot of grief and trouble by transplanting herself into another girl and then using her Witch body itself, Mikoto finally finds a small sliver of hope. She uses magic to resurrect Hanna and gives herself a new body as well.Yet, these new bodies cannot survive long, and after one last Christmas together, the two fade away hand in hand.

An eccentric, animal-loving Magical Girl who's not much of a people person. At home and at school, she fell victim to a world that seemed set on crushing her, which fueled her loathing for it. After making a contract, a certain encounter would lead her down the path towards an even stranger fate.

Her Story

Hanna’s story is a tale of a girl who was surrounded by injustice. She grew up poor with an abusive father who would hit her over the slightest things. Her mother opted to stay quiet and save herself from the man’s wrath, leaving Hanna to suffer alone. This, along with her love of superhero shows as a child, shaped Hanna significantly. She vowed she’d never become someone like her mother who stood by and let bad things happen.After both her parents die in what she sees as “stupid ways,” Hanna is sent to an orphanage. Using what little money they left her she’s able to get into a prestigious girls’ school as long as she can keep her grades up. For a brief moment, Hanna thought she was headed towards better days, but then the bullying began.Hanna bravely defended another girl from the bullies, only to become their new target. She made a wish with Kyubey to erase the bullies from existence but soon regretted it.Mikoto is the very first Magical Girl she meets and at first she’s wary of her cheerful nature. But soon, this wariness gives way to friendship, as the two share an exchange diary.However, tragedy strikes when Mikoto transforms into a Witch, a situation that was a horrible shock for Hanna. Not only had her only friend turned into the very monsters they were meant to fight, but she knew Mikoto was no longer the girl she knew either. She spends days wandering the city, looking for traces of Mikoto. And, to both their surprises, she found her.Now a ghost-like being, Mikoto’s consciousness latches onto Hanna, who can see and hear her. But Hanna, devastated by what happened, makes a plan to sacrifice herself as a villain to protect Mikoto’s innocence. She orchestrates her own defeat by the heroes, ultimately crushing her own Soul Gem and dying.Later, Mikoto finds a way to bring Hanna back to life, but their bodies can’t last long due to the magic deteriorating. After a final confrontation with the heroes, Hanna and Mikoto fade away hand in hand.
